Outdoor and online advertising: give each channel a clear job

Outdoor advertising places a message in a physical setting. Online advertising distributes it through digital platforms and placements. They can support different stages of the same campaign, but a combined plan works best when each channel has a defined role.

Prepare your brief

Start with the audience, location and action you want to encourage. Then decide which parts of the journey need a physical presence, which need a digital destination and how the advertiser will handle the response.

These are planning distinctions, not a ranking of effectiveness. A click is not equivalent to an outdoor audience estimate, and neither is automatically a sale.

Connect the physical message to a useful destination

If an outdoor advert sends someone online, make the destination worth the visit. The page should repeat the relevant offer or information, identify the location where appropriate and make the next step clear.

For a college campaign, that may be an admissions information or event page. For accommodation, it may be a property-specific enquiry route. For a store opening, it may be the address, opening details and current offer. A generic homepage may leave the visitor searching for the information promised by the advert.

Test the destination on a phone. Check loading, navigation, forms and any tracking method before the street activity begins. If the campaign uses a short link or code, verify the exact version printed or scheduled on the creative.

Use a consistent message without forcing one layout everywhere

The brand and proposition should remain recognisable, but the design needs to fit the medium. Outdoor often needs a shorter message with a clear visual hierarchy. An online destination can provide more explanation, options and terms.

Do not put a small, detailed online advert unchanged onto a moving display. Equally, do not assume a billboard graphic makes a complete landing page. Prepare artwork for each viewing context.

Coordinate the timetable

Have the digital destination and enquiry-handling process ready before the outdoor activity starts. If an offer changes, update both the destination and the advertising according to the production and approval timetable.

A filmed or photographed street campaign can also provide material for the advertiser’s own communications. Specify any commissioned photography or video separately from basic proof of delivery, including the intended use and approvals.

Keep the measurements separate

Report outdoor delivery, online delivery and commercial outcomes as distinct series. Use consistent dates, and explain which response routes were tracked. Someone may see a physical advert and later search for the brand without using the printed link; a platform report may not identify that path.

When several channels change at once, the resulting difference cannot automatically be credited to a single channel. A useful review asks whether the combined plan delivered, what response was recorded and what should improve next time. Read the measurement guide.

What to send for a coordinated brief

Tell us which online campaigns and landing pages will support the outdoor work, the shared objective and any fixed dates. Identify who owns the creative, website and enquiry response. The Bike Ads can then plan the outdoor component around the wider activity and the evidence you need.

Discuss the outdoor part of your campaign or compare the physical formats.

Keep planning.
